My Ripper Hunting Days can be enjoyed simply as an historical murder mystery, but I suspect Bernard Boley’s true intentions lie elsewhere. He has written a picaresque drama about courage and personal responsibility and the consequences of family legacy. Its theme is not only how individual lives may be shaped by the course of history but how history itself is shaped by the actions of individuals. Ambitiously, several of the novel’s most important characters are kept on the periphery of the tale, and the Jack the Ripper murders are illuminated largely by subordinating them to the unfolding of Riley’s individual destiny. These are risky literary maneuvers, but the author pulls them off magnificently. This is a thoughtful, skillfully plotted and fascinating work that shines with intelligence.

I rarely read 'Ripper' fiction for fear of stumbling across inaccuracies of the period that might distract me, but this book is an exception. Bernard Boley has obviously researched Victorian Whitechapel in great detail & his choice of main character, Woodrow Reilly, lends a plausible edge to involvement in the crimes. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end & congratulate the author on a job well done.

Je lis rarement la fiction de 'Ripper' par peur de tomber sur des inexactitudes de l’époque qui pourraient me distraire, mais ce livre est une exception. Bernard Boley a évidemment fait des recherches sur l’époque victorienne de Whitechapel dans les moindres détails et son choix du personnage principal, Woodrow Reilly, donne un avantage plausible à l’implication dans les crimes. J’ai vraiment apprécié ce livre du début à la fin et je félicite l’auteur pour un travail bien fait.

Thoroughly enjoyable read, following the adventures of Woodrow Reily as he tries to prove who he believes is Jack the Ripper. The story moves at a fast pace and the characters are very believable. I especially liked how the story finished. Look forward to more from this author. Highly recommend.

Une lecture tout à fait agréable, en suivant les aventures de Woodrow Reily alors qu’il essaie de prouver celui qu'il croit être Jack l’Éventreur. L’histoire avance à un rythme rapide et les personnages sont très crédibles. J’ai particulièrement aimé la façon dont l’histoire s’est terminée. Dans l’attente de plus de cet auteur. Je le recommande vivement.
